Pedro Pascal Comments on How HBO’s The Last of Us Compares to The Mandalorian

Pedro Pascal had pretty busy year as he spent quite a bit of time filming HBO’s upcoming video game adaptation The Last of Us followed by Croatia-set production for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which he co-starred alongside Nicolas Cage. Although we don’t know for sure when the HBO and HBO Max subscribers will have a chance to get the first glimpse of The Last of Us, the actor recently talked about the upcoming series during a recent interview with GQ.

When asked about the story’s similarity between two different platforms, the actor said, There’s a very, very creative way of honouring what’s important and also preserving what is iconic to the experience of the video game, and also [to include] things that you wouldn’t necessarily expect. And then directions that you would expect it to go, and it might not… they’re doing some really smart things, is all I can say. It’s similar to the way Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni treat The Mandalorian, in how [Mazin and Druckmann] are treating The Last of Us — it’s in good hands because they love it so much. Well, clearly Neil created the video game, but Craig loves it so much. So it really is made for the people that love it. And there’s some very intense storytelling for people who might be less familiar.”

Although both shows aren’t similar at all, it undeniable that both of the series share a similar vibe in the way writers approach the original materials. As video game adaptations are pretty difficult to get right, it’ll be interesting to see how the writers adapt the story from the popular video game.

As mentioned earlier, adapting video game stories is a significant challenge itself than creating a new character’s story. As a result, it’s likely that The Last of Us’ Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann obviously had a variety of different challenges to take on. However, both know what made the game great and hopefully we’ll see the adaptation at large.

Although we don’t know a lot about the upcoming show and there’s a lot of doubt surrounding the video game adaptation, fans were also skeptical before The Mandalorian came out. However, those doubts are long gone as the showrunners worked diligently to make the story work throughout The Mandalorian’s first two seasons. As a result, it’ll be interesting to see how The Last of Us works as a TV show.
