This year’s Mobile World Congress saw some major development in smartphone processors market and MediaTek introduced its new Dimensity 8000 series of processors. The new series consists of two different models, the 8000 and 8100 which can be considered direct replacement for last year’s Dimensity 1200 series.
According to the company, the new chips will serve a premium smartphone market that is more affordable than flagship phones that comes with Dimensity 9000 series of processors. While we’ll need to wait to see, the goal is to bring “flagship features” to a slightly lower price point for 5G phones that cost approximately $400-$700.
The Dimensity 8000 is a 5nm octo-core (4x A78 and 4x A55 cores) system on a chip that should be capable of heavy computing and graphics intensive tasks. The company expects that the new processor will match Qualcomm Snapdragon 888’s performance with better power efficiency. At the moment however, we’ll need to wait to find out how the new processor performs in real world.
In the official announcement, MediaTek revealed that the new series of processors will support camera up to 200MP meaning simultaneous camera capture using a combination of 108MP and lower camera sensors. As a result, smartphones packed with the processor will be an attractive option for Tiktokers and vloggers.
As the company is known for packing processors in more affordable smartphones, it’s likely that the company will gain more ground in the smartphone market with offerings in the $400-$700 segment. Over the years, MediaTek’s market share in the smartphone market has grown significantly as the company recently claimed that it grabbed the first spot in terms of units. As a result, it’ll be interesting to see how the company grows in the coming years.
