Ever since Smartphone market blew up few years earlier, Qualcomm and MediaTek have been competing with each other to take the top spot of smartphone chip manufacturer. Despite the competition, MediaTek was considered to be the inferior option compared to Qualcomm but with lower price tag. However, MediaTek have improved significantly since then and now, new research has revealed that MediaTek overtook Qualcomm to become the leading mobile chipset manufacturer.
If you’ve been following news lately, then you might already know that MediaTek was already taking lead by the third quarter of last year despite ongoing pandemic. Interestingly, the latest data has revealed that MediaTek shipped 113.8 million chips last year for a total of 351.8 million units, a 47.8% increase compared to its numbers in 2019. The figure accounts for 27.2 percent of the market share compared to Qualcomm’s 25 percent market share.
While MediaTek’s sales figure is impressive, the increased sales are likely to be caused by Huawei’s problems throughout last year. After Huawei was added to the US entity list, the smartphone manufacturer was forced to turn to MediaTek for the company’s HiSilicon Kirin chips supply. Apart from Huawei, Oppo and Realme shipped a combined 83.19 million units last year that contributed to the company’s latest achievement.
As we move forward, it’s likely that MediaTek will continue to hold the position as the market for cheaper smartphones is growing at a steady rate.
