After more than 25 years, Ace Ventura is finally making a comeback to the big screen after Morgan Creek, one of the studios behind the original Jim Carrey comedy hits revealed that Ace Ventura 3 is in active development for Amazon. Moreover, given the movie will be written by those behind Sonic the Hedgehog, many are wondering if Jim Carrey will return to reprise the fan favorite role.
Although details about the movie is pretty scarce, a representative from Morgan Creek revealed some details of the project during an interview. Due to the studio’s extensive library, the studio is seeing a demand to revive many properties including a new installment in the Ace Ventura series.
During the interview, the studio said, “We’re pretty excited about our franchise developments with Exorcist and the Ace Ventura franchise… During COVID, audiences have been in love and are thrilled to have beloved characters brought back with new stories. Ace Ventura will see a new day at Amazon as a major motion-picture/theatrical with the Sonic the Hedgehog writers.”
While it’s good to know that there’ll be a new movie in the series, it’s not confirmed if Jim Carry will return to reprise his role. However, since the writers behind Sonic the Hedgehog are working on the new Ace Ventura movie, it won’t be particularly surprising if Carrey returns for the movie.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, released in 1994, turned Jim Carrey into a comedy superstar. In the movie, Carry plays a role of a detective trying to solve a case about Miami Dolphins’ missing mascot. The movie grossed $107 million against a modest budget of $12 million. The sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, brought in $212 million.
While there was a direct-to-video spin-off titled Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective was released back in 2009, it’ wasn’t well received. As a result, it’ll be interesting to see how the fans receive the new movie. Although the movie is produced by Amazon, Morgan Creek implied that Ace Ventura 3 will have a theatrical release.
