Although Microsoft has tried to push its Edge browser with major redesigns over the years, the company hasn’t really been successful in attracting customers. However, a lot of people were genuinely surprised when Microsoft announced that the company will use Chromium to rebuilt its Edge browser. As most of the popular browsers use Chromium, the decision meant Microsoft might finally be competing with other companies.
If you were looking forward to the release of the Chromium Edge, you will be glad to know that the new browser is now available for download. In addition to Windows, the browser is also available for macOS devices in case you want to try it out on a Mac. As you might already know, Chromium is an open-source web browser platform by Google and Chrome is based on the platform. As a result, the new Edge might not feel way too different.
For instance, users will be able to sync browsing history between multiple devices. Moreover, users of Edge will now get access to Chrome Web Store which enables everyone to use any extensions with Edge. At the moment however, Edge is an option download for all users.
Microsoft’s decision isn’t surprising considering the browser lacks some features at the moment. However, the company is working on bringing these features in future updates. When these features are introduce, it’s likely that Microsoft will release a Windows 10 update that will update the current build of Edge to the new version.
Although it’s too early to say anything conclusive, moving to Chromium will make Microsoft more competitive when it comes to browser market. Moreover, as the new Edge will be the default browser on new computers, it’s likely that the new users won’t need to download Chrome thanks to Edge’s access to Chrome Web Store.
