Ahead of the weekend, a lot of analysts predicted that Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep would claim the top spot at the box office. To everyone’s surprise, the latest Stephen King adaptation didn’t really lit up the box office numbers as it managed to pull in just over $14 million as Midway became a surprise hit at the box office.
Leading up to the release of Doctor Sleep, analysts predicted that the movie would open with a figure between $25 to $30 million. However, it seems that the movie didn’t attract a lot of fans of The Shining. While it is still early days, it’s likely that the movie will end up losing quite a bit of money for Warner Bros. Although some movies have failed in the domestic box office while performing great at the international market, it’s likely that it won’t be the case for Doctor Sleep as the movie managed to bring in just $20 million in the foreign market.
Doctor Sleep’s failure is pretty confusing considering the movie was liked by both critics and fans alike. However, it’s likely that fans of the original movie weren’t particularly invested in the sequel. On the other hand, Midway became surprised everyone with its performance at the box office. Roland Emmerich’s World War II epic claimed the top spot at the box office with $17.5 million. However, it still has a long way to go before it can be considered a success.
As for the other movies released in the weekend, John Cena’s Playing With Fire took the third place with $12.8 million and Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding’s Last Christmas brought in $11.6 million. And lastly, Terminator: Dark Fate experienced a 63 percent drop from its first weekend as it brought in just $10.8 million which means the movie might be one of the biggest flops of this year.
