Facebook Issues Apology after Complaints Regarding Racism in the Company Culture

Facebook Employees Object to The Social Network’s Political Ad Policy

Facebook has attracted attention for all sorts of negative reasons over last couple of years due to the company’s role in spreading false information. However, the social network came under spotlight again earlier last week after a group of Facebook employees detailed incidents of racial bias and discrimination through a post on Medium.

In the post, one anonymous poster wrote, “While eating breakfast, two white employees asked me to clean up after their mess. I am a program manager. I told my manager about the incident. She told me I need to dress more professionally.”

Another poster added, “I spoke at a regular team meeting and gave my opinion about a topic I am a subject matter expert on. I was told after the meeting by the manager that I was disrespectful for speaking at this meeting, that my opinion was not wanted, that I was being arrogant in sharing that opinion, and not to speak at any future meetings unless called upon.”

Shortly after the post went viral, Bertie Thomson, Facebook vice president of corporate communications issued an apology. He said, “No one at Facebook, or anywhere, should have to put up with this behavior. We are sorry. It goes against everything that we stand for as a company. We’re listening and working hard to do better.”
