Although we are still couple of months away from getting next generations of consoles, Sony will be extremely pleased with the longevity of the PlayStation 4. In the second quarter 2019 financial results posted earlier today, Sony https://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/19q2_supplement.pdf revealed that the company has sold 2.8 million units of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro to bring the total number up to 102.8 million.
This latest figure makes the PlayStation 4 the second best-selling gaming console as it has beaten the original PlayStation’s 102.49 million record. However, the latest console is still a long way from PlayStation 2’s 155 million lifetime sales. As a result of this, Nintendo’s Wii has dropped down to fourth place as it has sold 101.63 million units during its lifetime.
Despite the record number of sales, the company’s overall revenue has taken a minor hit as we head towards release of next generations of consoles. According to the report, Sony’s revenue has gone down by 17 percent compared to last year’s same period. As a result, the company expects to ship 13.5 million PS4 units during this fiscal year.
As Sony recently confirmed that PlayStation 5 will be coming out in the Holiday 2020, it’s unlikely that the PS4 will beat PS2’s record to become the best-selling consoles of all time.
