As you might already know, WhatsApp like any other application, experiments with the features before making them available to public. Although WhatsApp introduced status a long time ago, the feature hasn’t really gone through major changes over time. If you want to hide specific statuses from your contacts, you don’t really have an option. Interestingly, WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will allow users to hide status from their contacts in one version of the app.
The latest beta, WhatsApp version 2.19.183 brings a ‘Hide’ button to contact list as well as the Muted updates header. If you enable this, it will hide all of the statuses you’ve previously muted. WABetaInfo reports that the button is not available in the section for the current beta meaning even beta testers won’t be able to use the feature. At the moment, it’s unclear if the feature will be rolled out in the beta version of the app.
This latest feature comes just days after WhatsApp revealed that it is working on a new share option that will allow users to share their status to other services including Facebook, Google Photos and Gmail among others.
While we will have to wait to find out more, WhatsApp is going to some major changes as the company prepares to bring advertisements to the app from next year. Earlier last year, officials revealed that the app will get advertisements and unlike other apps, the ads will appear in the status. As a result, Facebook is trying to bring changes to status as the feature hasn’t really yielded the amount of engagement the social network was hoping for prior to launch. As Facebook’s Libra is set to arrive for WhatsApp along with other apps, it’s likely that we will see more changes in the coming months in an attempt to get more users on board with the app.
