In a recently published study, scientists have claimed there’s a huge mysteries mass buried underneath moon’s South Pole-Aitken basin. While the researchers aren’t certain, they claim that the mass might contain metal remains of an asteroid that hit the moon approximately four billion years ago.
During the course of the research, scientists measured the changes in the strength of gravity around the moon. In order to do so, they used NASA’s Gratify Recovery and Interior Laboratory mission and lunar topography data. After analyzing the data, scientists claimed that the asteroid might got stuck in the layer between moon’s core and crust.
Talking about their latest study, lead author Peter B. James said, “Imagine taking a pile of metal five times larger than the Big Island of Hawaii and burying it underground. That’s roughly how much unexpected mass we detected.”
“We did the math and showed that a sufficiently dispersed core of the asteroid that made the impact could remain suspended in the Moon’s mantle until the present day, rather than sinking to the Moon’s core.”
The researchers suggested that another explanation would be that as the moon cooled down, magma created the mysterious mass.
