The latest upgrade will include a new dynamical core called the Finite-Volume Cubed-Sphere (FV3). This change will result in improved global weather prediction as well as forecasts of severe weather and winter storms.
In the official announcement, the organization revealed that Finite-Volume Cubed-Sphere was initially developed by scientists in an attempt to predict weather patterns over a long period of time. However, since then, it has been expanded to become main tool for Global Forecast System in recent years. With the dynamic core, the organization will be able to make more precise prediction for up to a week.
