We have known for a while that James Wan is currently working on an Aquaman spin-off based on The Trench. Although rumors for a long time suggested that the upcoming movie might be another addition in the list of superhero movies, Wan recently confirmed that the writers are still working on the story of the upcoming movie and it’s more likely will be a monster movie rather than a traditional superhero movie.
Wan’s latest comments came during his interview with Comicbook.com as he discussed the progress of the upcoming movie. He said, “We, you know, we’re still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don’t want to get into that too much, but definitely it’s one that I really want to lean into the horror of it, so it’s going to play more as a monster horror movie then it will as a superhero film, but it’s still definitely part of the Aquaman world.”
If you have watched Wan’s previous works, then you shouldn’t really be surprised with his latest comments. Although he directed both Aquaman and Furious 7 in recent years, the director is well known for his works on horror genre over the years thanks to Conjuring series. Interestingly, Peter Safran previously said that we might see The Trench before Auqaman 2 hits theaters in future.
At the time, Safran said that they want to explore the creatures from Aquaman more in the coming years and Trench will give a perfect opportunity to introduce several other characters for future Aquaman movie. At the time, the producer said, “”We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie. Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be.”
As the development of the movie is still in the early stage, don’t expect to hear anything on the production anytime soon. However, as we move closer to the end of the year, we should hear more from the studio in the coming months.
