Although we first learned about Gears of War movie back in 2016, the production of the movie has been pretty slow thus far. Earlier last November, Universal hired F. Scott Frazier to write the screenplay. While there have been plenty of speculations surrounding the storyline of the movie, we finally learned that the movie’s story will be different from the video game.
During a recent interview with IGN, Rod Fergusson talked about the movie as he said that the movie will be set in an alternate reality. He said that they decided to create an independent story in an order to make a great movie which will tell character’s own story. He said, “In order for the movie to be successful, it has to be a great movie first and a Gears movie second. Basically, the way that we sort of reconciled that was, we said, ‘oh the movie should be an alternate reality. It should not be dependent on the game story, nor should it influence the game story.'”
While Fergusson’s comments might be disappointing to fans of the series, it isn’t a particularly bad approach given history of video game movies. Video game movies over the years have failed to live up to expectations as studios wanted to create movies that could connect with games’ existing player base. However, such storytelling often leads to thin character development. In order to prevent such problems, writers have decided to make independent characters. However, the movie will still take place in Sera and feature several characters from the game but will tell a different story.
If the Fergusson’s comments are anything to go by, we might be in for a project which will finally bring a decent video game movie. At the moment, Universal hasn’t hired anyone to direct the upcoming movie. However, if the studio decides to speed up the production, we might get some news in the coming months.
