While everyone was pretty disappointed with 2016’s Ghostbusters movie, we are finally set to get a “true” Ghostbusters sequel next year. The movie will also bring back all of the original cast members and recently Dan Aykroyd told Gamespot that the upcoming movie will connect to the first movie.
During this interview, he said,”Jason [Reitman] came up with this idea, which is just so good, everybody got it right away and understood. It will connect, better than anything, to the first movie. That’s about all I can say about it, but the two movies will connect, in a way that hasn’t been done before.”
Aykroyd’s comments should come off as a relief for fans who were wondering if we are getting the cast members just for the sake of nostalgia. During his interview, he also talked about a direct sequel that was in works but never got into production. According to the actor, the story would see the team to return to Manhattan following their trips to Scotland. He added, “We kind of lost interest for a while there. After the second movie, it was successful, but everybody went on to new things. We tried different stories. Nobody was happy with the story. I think Hellbent could have worked, but I had other collaborators there, and we were all a team. Harold [Ramis], Ivan [Reitman], myself, Bill [Murray]–no one found a story that we all liked.”
While we will never know how that movie would turn out, the good news is, we are finally getting Ghostbusters 3 next year. As of now, Ghostbusters 3 will feature four teenagers as the new recruits of the team and is set to start shooting later next month. Unless there are delays, the movie will hit theaters on July 10, 2020. As the studio moves forward with the production, more details of the movie’s storyline should come out over next couple of months.
