Few years earlier, Atari attracted a lot of attention after revealing that the company will release a VCS game console in future. However, everyone was disappointed due to number of delays over the release. Recently, the company stated that the console is finally coming out next year and those who are interested can now pre-order the device from its official website
While we will have to wait to find out if the company manages to meet the expected release date this time around, it hasn’t revealed an exact date except “March 2020”. Moreover, Atari notes that the release date of March 2020 is just an estimate and can change due to unforeseen circumstances.
As for the console itself, the company hasn’t listed the specifications of the upcoming device. While we will have to wait to see what kind of hardware the upcoming console packs, previous reports suggested that the basic VCS model will come with an AMD processor, 4GB or RAM, 32GB of internal storage as well as an AMD Radeon GPU. The console will allow players to run games at 60 fps with 4K resolution. The basic model will start with a price tag of $250 while the 8GB version will cost $280.
Although the specifications aren’t concrete or verified just yet, Atari will have to provide much more value than the specifications mentioned above after its absence from console market for two decades. For instance, these specifications are worse than those of current Xbox One and PS4. With Microsoft and Sony releasing their next generation consoles next year, Atari might struggle to find solid grounds with reported offerings.
Most importantly, the company might not have enough games in its library. Recently, Microsoft announced its upcoming Xbox Game Pass with pretty attractive pricing models Additionally, the company is planning on releasing at least one title in every three months for Xbox Game Pass subscription package which already has over 100 titles. As for other companies, Google’s Stadia is set to become a successful venture due to its offerings with more publishers are likely to join the program in the coming months. As a result, it’s more than likely that Atari will struggle to find customers who want more than just nostalgia when it comes to consoles.
As for now, we don’t know for sure what kind of console the company is planning to bring later next year. If it can manage to meet the March 2020 release date, we are likely to know more from Atari in the coming months.
