While Apple might not come to your mind when you think of the largest gaming companies out there, according to a new report by Newzoo (via Appleinsider) Apple is the fourth largest gaming company in the world in terms of revenue.
While the news might be surprising considering that Apple doesn’t bring any games, remember that the company sells several high-profile games through App Store for different iOS devices. Due to its devices’ massive popularity, Apple managed to get ahead of successful companies like Activision-Blizzard when it comes to profit gained from gaming related offerings.
While it’s unclear if Apple made its profits from selling the games directly from App Store or a combination of sales along with in-game purchases and ads, the firm estimates that Apple made over $2 billion from games in the first quarter of 2018.
Apple recently unveiled Apple Arcade, the company’s video game subscription service which will give gamers access to a number of exclusive games for a monthly fee. However, we will have to wait to find out if the company’s latest venture becomes a successful one as it will be releasing later this year. The latest report just confirms that Apple might have seen untapped potential with its video game offerings. As a result, it won’t be shocking if Apple manages to compete with other game streaming services set to debut later this year.
