Scientists Are Making Laser So Powerful that It Can Rip Apart Empty Space

A group of scientists from China is set to make the world’s most powerful laser in a laboratory. If successful, the laser will produce laser pulses with 100 petawatts of power which is higher than the total energy output of the entire world in a year.

The group of scientists are creating the laser in an attempt to create extreme conditions and pressure to further advance field of astrophysics as well as other field of science. According to Li Ruxin, a scientist in the group, the laser will be able to focus on a spot measuring just 3 micrometer which will be about 10 10 trillion trillion times more intense than the sunlight which comes to Earth.

Apart from providing new ways to advance several fields of study, the SEL laser will be able to tear apart space itself. Talking about the impact of the research, Li told Science, “That would be very exciting. It would mean you could generate something from nothing.”

Interestingly, the group of researchers from China aren’t the only ones trying to create extremely powerful lasers. Recently, Japanese scientists have proposed a similar device with 30 PW. On the other hand, physicist in Russia are currently planning on creating 180PW laser Exawatt Center for Extreme Light Studies.
