Although FM radio was pretty popular back in the days, it has fallen out of the practice in last couple of years. As a result, smartphone manufacturers are either ditching the feature completely or simply choosing not to enable them. However, Samsung has confirmed that its future smartphones will have FM chips which will enable them to listen to local radio stations.
This latest move comes after FCC’s few weeks earlier urged smartphone manufacturers to provide support for FM radio. As FM radio is freely accessible to everyone who can pick it up without using internet, the feature can come handy at the time of emergency or in areas without internet connection. As a result, FM radio still remains to be one of the most popular method of communication in disaster affected areas.
However, as mentioned earlier, smartphone manufacturers are not supporting FM radio which caught FCC’s attention. Back in February last year, FCC asked smartphone makers to activate FM chips in their handsets. While some manufacturers are either ditching the feature completely from their devices, it’s good to see that Samsung is giving its users option to utilize FM radio in case they want to.
