For a long time, Sony has been rumored to make a shift towards OLED displays although the company has been using LCD display panels for a long time. Interestingly, a recent report has claimed that although Sony is still focused on producing the LCD panels, the company will sign a new deal with LG to get OLED displays for the next flagship Xperia model.
The latest report comes via Business Korea which pointed out that LG will increase its production for OLED displays with Apple is touted to be one of the potential customers. If the latest report is true, then Sony will join Apple to use LG’s OLED panels in future Xperia smartphone.
As for now, Sony is set to host its own press conference in next month’s Mobile World Congress which will bring multiple flagship models such as Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+. While there hasn’t been any confirmation, rumors for a while suggested that Sony is set to unveil a new flagship smartphone during the event. If that’s the case, then we might see LG’s OLED displays.
Although we will need to take these reports with a grain of salt until the companies officially announce their products, given that Google has used LG’s OLED panels last year for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, it’s likely that we will see more companies using similar panels in the following months.
