Despite its popularity, panoramic sunroofs are notoriously dangerous as over last couple of years, major manufacturers have recalled their different models due to faulty sunroofs. Although some manufacturers have resolved the problems by eliminating the technology altogether, Hyundai has created a special airbag to make its car safer.
The airbag is made of special tempered glass which is located inside the sunroof. When the vehicle is in danger, it will open under one second to protect the passengers.
While we will have to wait to see how successful the latest technology becomes in terms of protecting the passengers, the company revealed that the latest feature will prevent head injuries. For instance, if the sunroof is open and the car rolls over, the airbag will prevent his/her head from hitting or falling out of the vehicle.
This latest move comes after different auto manufacturers in recent years have seen lawsuits due to the feature due to its danger. Despite that, panoramic sunroofs remain to be highly popular among consumers. While manufacturers currently invest about $4 billion per year in sunroofs, the number is expected to go beyond $11 billion by 2024.
In a recent report, a Transparency Market Research analyst said, “Consumers are increasingly demanding luxury cars with built-in sunroof features thanks to increasing disposable incomes and exposure to an increasing number of automotive companies.”
While the latest innovation will be a great addition, consumers will have to wait little bit longer as Hyundai’s sunroof airbag won’t be in cars until 2019.
