While Messenger Kids app will give children a new method of communication with their parents’ allowance, it also means that children will be exposed to technology at a much earlier stage of their lives. And now, 97 health experts have wrote a letter to Mark Zuckerberg earlier on Tuesday asking Facebook to shut down the application.
The letter notes, “Raising children in our new digital age is difficult enough. We ask that you do not use Facebook’s enormous reach and influence to make it even harder.”
While Facebook at the time of launching the app said that it has taken precautions to prevent misuse of the app, the letter said that the application might have negative impact on society as the app will normalize social media usage among children. The letter adds, “But even if these safeguards are effective. The app’s overall impact on families and society is likely to be negative, normalizing social media use among young children and creating peer pressure for kids to sign up for their first account.”
