While Microsoft recently killed off its Windows phones, the company is still bringing applications to Android users on a regular basis. For instance, recently, the company introduced Microsoft Launcher for Android smartphones. And now, the company has launched a new AI powered application for those who are interested in learning Chinese.
While the latest application will join a number of applications currently available in the market, Microsoft revealed that the application’s AI is the key differentiator of the app from its competitor. Yan Xia, senior develop lead at Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing said, “You think you know Chinese, but if you meet a Chinese person and you want to speak Chinese, there is no way you can do it if you have not practiced. Our application addresses this issue by leveraging our speech and natural language processing technology.”
Thanks to the AI, the application can understand what the user is trying to say and then will be able to correct something if the user is wrong. In case of learning Chinese, this step is pretty important since the one character form the language can be pronounced in four different tones and inflections with each tone expressing something different.
In case you didn’t know, the neural network is taught by Microsoft’s researchers by feeding it data directly from native speakers as well as other existing technologies. Thanks to the implement of the network, the application can give feedback to users about the areas where they need to improve. However, at the moment, the application is available for iOS.
