After a long summer with movies failing to live up to expectations, moviegoers finally treated with IT earlier this month. The movie went on to smash box office records during its first weekend as it made its way to the top of the box office with solid box office performance in the first weekend. And now, the movie has earned $60 million in its second weekend to win the second weekend at the box office. While there were two more releases, they didn’t perform up to expectations. Most importantly, IT went on to collect over $200 million in the domestic box office as it became the highest grossing September movies of all time.
The latest figures come via Box Office Mojo as the site reported that the Stephen King adaptation actually gained 45 more theaters to bring its total theater count to 4,148. As mentioned earlier, both of the new releases, American Assassin and mother! failed to live up to expectations with American Assassin brought $14.8 and Mother! managed mere $7.5 million against a $33 million and $30 million budget respectively.
While IT’s performance in the box office is certainly commendable, it will be interesting to see if the movie will continue to perform in similar fashion in the coming weeks as some of the highly anticipated movies are set to arrive in theater in the upcoming weekend. Next weekend will see three new movies with 20th Century Fox’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Ninjago Movie and Entertainment Studios’ Friend Request set for release.
