According to Apple, some people have serious conversations with Siri as they talk to the personal assistant about their stressful days. As a result, the tech giant has turned its attention to the possibility of turning the personal assistant into a personal therapist.
In order to make the goal possible, Apple is currently looking for an engineer to join its team with a background in psychology. The job description of the position noted that the applicant will “Play a part in the next revolution in human-computer interaction… We are looking for people passionate about the power of data and have the skills to transform data to intelligent sources that will take Siri to [the] next level.”
If you have followed development of personal assistant over the years, then you won’t be surprised by the latest development. While Siri was in the top position in terms of personal assistant for a long period of time, it has fallen back in competitions with other assistants such as Google assistant and Amazon Alexa. As Apple is actively trying to break into health market with its offerings, it’s not a surprise to see the tech giant trying to improve the application.
Earlier, Siri co-founder Tom Gruber discussed the possibility of using digital assistant as a personal assistant during his TED talk back in April. At the time, he said, “We can choose to use AI to automate and compete with us, or we can use AI to augment and collaborate with us, to overcome our cognitive limitations and to help us do what we want to do, only better.”
However, we will have to wait a long time before digital assistants can be turned into personal therapists as they will need to have a wide array of communication skills with the user. Despite that, it wouldn’t be surprising if the companies manage to meet the goal thanks to improved researches in the field of artificial intelligence in the recent years.
