Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk Performs Well at the Weekend Box Office

While San Diego Comic-Con 2017 lived up to its potential so far this year, there were several releases in the weekend that lived up to expectation. Although Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk did not live up to its expectations, it still managed to top the box office with over $50 million in collection. On the other hand, Girls Trip managed to surpass the expectation to secure second place with over $30 million box office collection.

The latest figures comes via Box Office Mojo which reported that Dunkirk opened over 3,700 theaters to surpass the director’s last box office hit, Interstellar which opened with $47.5 million back in 2014. The movie went on to perform relatively well as it grossed over $675 million against a massive $175 million budget. As of now, Dunkirk has a global tally of over $100 million which is likely to gain momentum in the coming days as more movie goers get out of the comic-con frenzy. Interestingly, the movie won’t be released in China up until September which will likely to contribute towards the movie’s success in the upcoming fall.

While Girls Trip didn’t have huge amount of box office success compared to Dunkirk, it’s worth noting that the movie is already a success thanks to its $19 million budget opposed to Dunkirk’s massive $150 million budget. Girls Trip opened up over 2500 theaters with an impressive $11,722 per screen average. However, the movie is set to be released internationally in just two regions which means that it will fall down in the competition in the coming weeks. However, given its impressive run in the domestic market, it won’t be surprising if the movie goes beyond all expectations.

As there aren’t a lot of movies lined up for production, chances are, the box office ranking won’t see major shakeups in the coming weeks. However, as both of the movies reach more viewers in the coming days, we will have to wait another week to figure out if both movies live up to the expectations in the coming week.
