Although Google is currently leading the search engine platforms, several other companies including Amazon is slowly catching up. While it might be a few years away before these search engines and companies featuring similar features catch up, WPP CEO Martin Sorrell has said that the ongoing changes in the technology will bring changes in the advertising industry and it will change the level of impact technology giants like Google, Amazon and Facebook will have in the coming years.
Sorrell talked about the rise of Amazon at the LIGHT Summit at Stanford university as the group discussed the rise of Amazon in recent years. He said that the company “is certainly a threat to Google in search, and one statistic from our retail operation is that 55% of product searches in the United States are initiated through Amazon search.”
Interestingly, he pointed out that Amazon has potential to become a competitor to Google in search. Analysts have mentioned in past that Amazon’s advertising platform corresponds to bring a revenue of $2.5 billion and will reach a whopping $5 billion in the coming years.
Talking about the changes in the platforms, Morgan Stanley said, “The insertion of a camera into Alexa raises privacy concerns, but that’s a powerful medium to engage with a consumer.”
