Twitter’s Co-Founder Talks about the Platform

Twitter played a major role in the last US Presidential election and earlier today, Twitter’s co-founder Ev Williams stated that he is sorry if the platform played a major role in electing Donald Trump as the US President.

The latest report takes a close look at his career and his current work to fix the internet as he believes that the internet is going away from the goal. In the report, he noted that he initially believed that developing platforms like Blogger and Twitter would improve the world by giving people a voice but now he thinks that he was wrong as the platforms have acted in relatively different ways.

Earlier in March, US President Donald Trump said that he believes that Twitter is one of the main contributing factor behind him becoming the current president as the platform enabled him to deliver his messages directly to his followers. Ev Williams wrote, “It’s a very bad thing, Twitter’s role in that. If it’s true that he wouldn’t be president if it weren’t for Twitter, then yeah, I’m sorry.”

As Twitter has become a platform with regular hate speeches and violent crimes, William compared it with a road where everyone slows down to watch car crashes. In order to limit such problems, the company started focusing on ways to limit features. And with Medium, Williams wants to try and find a path to change users’ behavior on internet.

This is clearly different from what Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey said regarding the issue. Recently, Jack Dorsey said that he has complicated feelings regarding the matter as he considers that Twitter keeps Trump accountable. Given that Trump has altered his words on a regular basis since the victory, such accountability doesn’t seem to matter to him so much.
