BMW’s 7 series cars are highly popular in the United States but recently the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that some older cars’ doors open unexpectedly during ride. As a result of this, the company has decided to recall more than 45,000 older cars.
The company has decided to recall cars from 2005-08 which feature a door latching system along with comfort access and soft door close option. The administration said, “In these vehicles, the door can appear to be closed, although it has stopped in a position where the main detent is not fully engaged. Thus an external influence [force] such as an irregular road surface, or an inadvertent interior contact by a vehicle occupant with the door, could result in an unexpected opening of the door while driving.”
After reviewing the problems associated with the vehicles, BMW said that they have found the problem and said, “BMW problem solution team came to the conclusion that it could be possible for a door to unexpectedly open while driving in the case where a hardware component [one of various sensors] of the latch or door handle could fail.”
However, the document didn’t say if the problem related to the vehicles had led to any crashes or injuries.
