Not a lot of people were surprised when Disney’s Beauty and the Beast came out and took over the box office. However, the latest live action move has now become the highest-grossing PG movie at the domestic box office of all time after breaking Disney’s previous record.
According to the latest figure at the Box Office Mojo, Beauty and the Beast has managed to make $478.59 million to edge past Finding Dory from last year. If you were surprised with the domestic box office success, then you should be even more surprised given that the movie became one of the highest grossing movies of this year overall after managing to bring in $1.185 billion worldwide. As of now, the movie is the highest grossing movie of the year but the record is expected to be overtaken by The Fate of the Furious which has made $1.158 billion already in box office.
These figures are little bit surprising as the original animated movie was a success both critically and commercially. The movie was the first animated movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Apart from that, it had a total income of $424.9 million worldwide. The remake on the other hand, wasn’t received well by critics despite being box office success. However, the movie was accepted by everyone and it wouldn’t be surprising if Disney decides to start a bunch of spin offs in the coming years.
