It’s a well-known fact that Radio waves, light and microwaves are made of electric and magnetic fields. However, this theory was established way back in 1860s by James Clerk Maxwell and recently, researchers led by Louisiana State University Asst. Professor Ivan Agullo have discovered that Gravity when combined with quantum effects, disrupts the electric-magnetic duality or symmetry of the electromagnetic field.
Talking about the discovery, Agullo said, “Gravity spoils the symmetry regardless of whether magnetic monopoles exist or not. This is shocking. The bottom line is that the symmetry cannot exist in our universe at the fundamental level because gravity is everywhere.”
“We have been able to write the theory of the electromagnetic field in a way that very much resembles the theory of fermions, and prove this absence of symmetry by using powerful techniques that were developed for fermions,”
This new discovery unsurprisingly challenges many established theories including the researches related to the birth and evolution of the universe. For example, Augllo mentioned that with successful measurement of the CMB, we can get accurate information related to the Big Bang. Over a long period of time, scientists have assumed that polarization of photons is not affected by the gravitational field in the universe which is dependent on electromagnetic symmetry. With the new discovery, scientists may need to take this into consideration which might lead to further explanations regarding the universe.
