Researchers at the Washington State University have claimed that they have managed to create a fluid with negative mass that can help to explain different phenomenon such as black holes or dark energy in future.
Hypothetically speaking, given that electric charge can be either positive or negative, similar rules can be applied towards matter and they should be able to have negative mass. For instance, the fluid used to create the negative mass has a distinctive feature as when this fluid is pushed, instead of moving forwards, it accelerates backwards. With the acceleration being negative, according to Newton’s Second Law of motion, mass can be negative theoretically in this case.
Although such case can be said to exist only in theory, previous theoretical research has shown that negative mass can exist in our universe without breaking laws related to general relativity. Researchers from Washington State University have managed to get a fluid to act in ways that relates to the theoretical researches related to negative mass. One of the researchers, Michael Forbes said, “What’s a first here is the exquisite control we have over the nature of this negative mass, without any other complications. Once you push, it accelerates backwards,” said Forbes. “It looks like the rubidium hits an invisible wall.”
However, such discovery is still in the early stages compared to many other discoveries in recent years. Despite that, it’s one of the many reasons to believe that there is a large amount of scientific breakthroughs yet to be made and it’s certainly exciting to see what happens next and if the concept of negative mass is actually true.
