The Fate of the Furious was clearly one of the most anticipated movies of the year and had all the potential to set new records. However, few would have bet the movie would break record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens to claim the biggest worldwide opening of all time.
According to a latest report by Variety, the eighth installment has managed to coup in $532.5 million over the weekend as it beat previous record of $529 million held by the Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Although there was a significant drop in the US market, the global appeal for the franchise still remains.
Moreover, the movie is currently the fourth highest grossing movie in the series after single weekend and is likely to finish with much higher number. Given that the movie performed so well during the opening weekend, it can certainly break the previous record set by the Furious 7 to become the highest grossing movie of the franchise. The official synopsis of the movie says,
“Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game and the rest of the crew has been exonerated the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before. From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.”
