Over last 15 years, Bill O’Reilly hosted the no.1 program in the cable news with “The O’Reilly Factor”. What more, the program managed to bring more than $400 million in advertising revenue between 2014 and 2016. Understandably, it was a major shock when Fox decided to fire him from the network.
This news comes after he settled several sexual harassment cases. An official statement said, “After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the Company and Bill O’Reilly have agreed that Bill O’Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel.”
This news is highly surprising although last few weeks a large number of high quality advertisers including Mercedes-Benz, Allstate, BMW, Bayer and Lexus opted out of advertising in his program and instead went for ad slots available in other programs. Moreover, pressure on the network was rising as many media insiders predicted that he would survive as he renewed his deal with the company recently.
However, as Roger Ailes was ousted last summer after anchor Gretchen Carlson sued him for sexual harassment, it’s not so surprising that the network is taking actions against similar allegations. Due to unpredictable opening months in Trump administration, cable news saw interesting rise in popularity. After another top anchor Megyn Kelly moved away from Network, Fox News had put Tucker Carlson’s Program into the time slot and the program experienced massive success as the program averaged more than 3 million viewers. With another top anchor out of the helm, it will be worthwhile to see how the network responds to fill the void by O’Reilly.
