Ahead of March 29’s Galaxy S8 announcement, Samsung has revealed that Bixby, intelligent voice assistant will run with the company’s upcoming flagship smartphone. Unlike other intelligent voice assistants that rely on a trigger word, Bixby will be activated with a physical button on the side of the S8 and the company is planning on bringing the assistant on other devices produced by Samsung.
Executive vice president of software and services for Samsung Electronics Injong Rhee has said that the S8 will come with preinstalled apps that will support Bixby straight out of the box and the company will bring more compatible apps over the coming months as he said, “Bixby will be our first step on a journey to completely open up new ways of interacting with your phone.”
While the company is pretty late in joining the voice assistive technology related market the company should be able to catch up on the competition given that the competitors are still far away from making their voice assistant perfect. For example, even Alexa is in very early stages of development in terms of answering complicated questions.
Most importantly, Samsung said that Bixby will perform pretty well as it is smart to understand commands with incomplete information to the best of its knowledge, then ask for more information. While Samsung finished 2016 as the largest smartphone maker globally, although Apple edged ahead of it in the fourth quarter and latest inclusion of several technologies including Bixby should help the company to remain competitive in the smartphone market alongside Apple.
