Shailene Woodley Says No to Divergent: Ascendant TV Movie

Although the first Divergent movie was a solid success in the global box office, Lionsgate announced last summer that the last movie in the series will be released as a TV movie due to declining figures in the box office. Afterwards, the movie will start a TV series. While the studio is yet to make any confirmation regarding the television series, star Shailene Woodley made it clear last year that she wasn’t happy about the studio’s move regarding the last movie of the series before pointing that she won’t be part of the television series if that happens. She didn’t have a change of heart now as she stated once again that she won’t be starring in the TV series during a red carpet event of her new HBO series Big Little Lies.

When she asked about her plans regarding her role as Tris Prior in the TV movie, she replied with a brief statement as she said, “No. I’m not going to be on the television show.”

Earlier last year, the actress was surprised to learn that the last movie will be a TV release rather than a big theatrical one. In fact, she said to be on plane when the news first came to light. Star Miles Teller also revealed that he didn’t have any idea as well regarding the announcement as he learned it 20 minutes before the news broke into internet. In an interview in August, he said,

“When we all signed on for the first one we had every intention of finishing it theatrically. We signed on for x amount of movies and you take that all into consideration. We wanted to see that storyline finish. You know, it’s moving into a different format. So who knows? We all really enjoyed that time we spent together and those characters.”

If the starts do not return to reprise their roles in the final movie, it will not be shocking since they signed on for a theatrical release rather than a TV movie. While the first movie in the series earned $288.8 million in the global box office against $85 million budget back in 2014, the second movie surpassed the global box office by $10 million. However, due to third movie seemingly failing to get expected height with mere $179 million in the global box office, the studio decided that the final movie will be a TV movie. However, since the announcement last summer, we are yet to know any significant detail regarding the movie and hopefully we will find out more about the movie pretty soon.
