These days, if a movie doesn’t get a sequel after a successful theatrical run, it’s the one of the most surprising thing that can happen given that there is ways to make the movie happen. As we have seen over last couple of years, often times, movie makers make sequels after sequels until the last one removes the good memory the first or sequels managed to create on our minds. Despite that, Universal Studio is moving ahead with The Purge 4 as we will get another sequel come 4th of July 2018.
The franchise has proven to be a cash cow for the producers as the last movie brought around $120 million from global box office with a mere $10 million production budget. However, there isn’t any official title just yet but last year, during an interview with Cinemablend director James DeMonaco said,
“I don’t think I’ll direct it. I would actually go back and I would try to talk about how it all started. That seems the natural next chapter in this, is to say, ‘Alright, we’ve done this trilogy. We see how it got to this point of someone trying to end it – this presidential figure. Now let’s go back and see how the fuck all this came about.’ How did this country get to a place where we were now accepting this kind of atrocity, this terrible thing, each year? I think there’s something interesting in that. I don’t think I’ll direct, between you and I. You can print that, I mean. I’m thinking of maybe writing or at least producing it, to make sure it stays true to what I like about the movies.”
As the series has proven to be a major earners for the studio, the studio are more than likely to extend the series beyond the upcoming movie. However, we have to wait and see as the movie will need to go into production to meet its official release date.
